Ascension of the Lord – 7th Sunday of Easter

Our groovy choir rocked the house with their rendition of the African American spiritual “Over My Head there is Music in the Air.” Celebrating the Ascension of the Lord and Memorial Day weekend, the mood was joyful! Parishioners burst out in applause.

Fr. Luis gave us a philosophical homily contrasting Platonic and eastern religious views of the idea of heaven. Comparing Plato’s cave with Taoist Yin-Yang, he reminded us that we must also integrate the spiritual and material elements of our lives. A summer parishioner from St. Dominic’s in San Francisco gave the right answer to Fr. Luis’ challenge question “What is Plato’s Cave about?” while the rest of us shrank in our seats trying desperately to avoid getting chosen. Whoever you are, thank you!

Confirmation Mass, May 21, 2017

In a moving ceremony we watched, listened and prayed as our young teens and preteens renewed their baptism vows and received the sacrament of confirmation, administered by Bishop Vasa. While catechising the Confirmandi he mentioned the sad fact that the world has been at war every year of their young lives. He reminded them that at Fatima Our Lady asked the young children to pray the rosary for world peace. He used his time with them teaching them to love the rosary and the chronology and significance of the mysteries.

We are grateful to the students, their parents, their instructors, Fr. Luis, Fr. Allen, Bishop Vasa and our choir for a beautiful ceremony. We applaud the confirmandi and teachers for their hard preparatory work. Congratulations to the confirmandi and their families. A special thank you to the choir for the beautiful music.

The Kilcullen family presented two youngsters from St. Philips parish today. Mr. Kilcullen had assisted in last week end’s retreat for the confirmandi. We are very grateful for his help.

Fifth Sunday of Easter, Mother’s Day

Our confirmandi enjoyed a retreat today at St. Hubert’s Hall led by Bernard Ciernick, MA RCIA instructor at St. Elizabeth, Guerneville. Next Sunday they will be confirmed by Bishop Robert F. Vasa at 2:00 PM mass. Today’s retreat started at 8:00 AM and ended with the 5:00 PM mass.

Ella Rozett, Director of Religious Eduation at St. Philip the Apostle and John Kilcullen, father of confirmandi Danny and Conor attended along with the St. Elizabeth’s confirmandi. St. Elizabeth’s instructor Denise Danzart was unable to attend due to a family health emergency.

Confirmand Danny Kilcullen volunteered to place the crown of roses on the statue of Mary before mass.

Confirmand Alex Diaz did the first reading.

Confirmand Conor Kilcullen read the second reading.

Fr. Luis encouraged the young adolescent confirmandi to remain close to God and to understand their faith, to continue to study and understand their faith so that they would be able to live their faith throughout their lives.

We pray for our confirmandi that their faith will remain strong as they grow into adulthood and that God’s love will be showered upon them.
